I think the hardest thing, frankly, as an improviser, is to get to that point where you can live life onstage. Where you can just have a funny, interesting conversation with someone and be able to get up onstage and have that same conversation without it being this weird, hyper comic version of it.

So what’s the best way to get new improvisers to this point? I almost feel like this should be the place to get first, and THEN start worrying about game. I sometimes wonder if it’s helpful to learn about game before knowing how to act like a human being on stage, and how to yesand in a realistic way. An improviser who is comfortable just naturally yesanding can always fall back on that in a scene without game. Improvisers who think game and nothing else have no backup parachute, and I see an awful lot of scenes go splat on the ground when the first “game parachute” isn’t there for them. I’d rather watch two improvisers honestly connecting and building and living within an engaging reality on stage, then watch a “game” scene that resembles nothing you’d ever see in the real world.
